We’re Hiring! Marine Operations Technician

Littlehampton Harbour Board are recruiting for a Marine Operations Technician to join our team!

Casual and Seasonal Positions

We regularly recruit for enthusiastic people to join our pool of casual staff positions, including:

Seasonal Weekend Patrol Crew

A team of crew who assist the weekend Duty Officers with general patrol of the harbour, providing a safety and enforcement presence, giving berthing assistance to visiting vessels, and attending to any incidents within the harbour limits.
This is a paid position with shifts available on weekends and bank holidays from 1 April to 30 September each year, on a rota basis.

Boat handling experience and a marine VHF radio operator’s certificate is desirable but not essential.
Training is provided in March, prior to the start of the summer season.

Shipping Support Staff

A team of crew to assist with commercial shipping movements. General duties may include quayside line handling and footbridge operation.

This is a paid position at a fixed rate for each shift. Shifts normally last approximately 2 hours, but may be shorter.

Shipping movements are ad-hoc and may occur outside of normal working hours. Notice is normally given a few days in advance, and individuals in the pool of staff indicate their availability for each shift as desired. Shifts are then allocated fairly amongst the team.

Previous relevant experience is desirable but not essential, and training is provided.

Work Experience

We are pleased to offer opportunities to school and college students looking for week-long work experience in the marine sector.

Whilst there is no such thing as a ‘typical week’ at Littlehampton Harbour, students wishing to gain an insight in the varied responsibilities of a Statutory Harbour Authority can expect to be involved in a wide range of activities such as boat handling, hydrographic survey, marine engineering, maintenance of harbour infrastructure, conservancy, and patrol.
