HM Coastguard has reported an increase in water-related incidents around Littlehampton Harbour and is urging the public to take extra care when using the River Arun and surrounding beaches.
Strong tidal currents develop as the tide rises and can quickly pull swimmers, paddleboarders and other water users towards the harbour entrance. The highest-risk area is Bay 1 – the stretch between the river wall, pier and first breakwater – where powerful currents can create a dangerous “sucking” effect that can overwhelm even strong swimmers. Similar conditions can occur on the west side of the river near West Works.
Key safety advice:
- Stay out of Bay 1 once the tide starts to rise.
- Do not use inflatables in the sea, as they can be swept away by strong currents.
- If caught in a current, swim towards the shore rather than directly away from the river.
- If unable to escape, Float to Live: lie on your back, keep your airway clear, spread your arms and legs, relax and call for help.
- If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.
- Do not enter the water to attempt a rescue. Keep the casualty in sight and use a lifebuoy if it is safe to do so.
Beachgoers are encouraged to swim only between the red and yellow flags when RNLI lifeguards are on duty and seek advice from Arun District Council Foreshore Officers if unsure.
The Coastguard also reminds everyone that swimming in Littlehampton Harbour and tombstoning are prohibited under local byelaws. As a busy working harbour with regular vessel movements, entering the water within the harbour area is extremely dangerous.
In any coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
