Owners and/or masters of wrecked or abandoned vessels are fully liable for the costs of ensuring safety of navigation for others, removal and disposal of the vessel. Abandoned vessels of some value will be auctioned to cover costs in line with the Harbour’s powers under section 252 of the Merchant Shipping Act and section 56 of the Harbour, Docks and Piers Clauses Act 1847.
